Jobs you can enquire about

  1. Leaks and burst pipes

A split pipe after a frost, a joint weeping under the sink or a brown ring growing on the ceiling. Tell us about it and, if you agree, a single local plumber who works in your postcode receives it, provided one does.

  2. Blocked sinks, baths and toilets

A sink that holds water, a bath that takes an age to empty or a toilet that rises when flushed. Explain what it is doing and, with your say-so, we pass it to one plumber whose area takes in your street, where there is one.

  3. Showers and bathroom plumbing

A shower that runs hot and cold, a tray that leaks into the room below, or a new basin, bath or toilet to fit. Describe the job and, with your permission, it goes to one nearby plumber covering your postcode, if such a plumber exists.

  4. Water pressure and supply problems

Weak taps, a shower that fades whenever the washing machine fills, banging pipes or a supply that stops altogether. Let us know and, with your agreement, a single nearby plumber covering your postcode is sent the details, assuming one exists.

Enquiry to plumber

How it works

  1. Say what is going on.

Pick the nearest match, add your postcode and explain what you can see or hear. Everyday words are fine and nobody expects plumbing terms.

  2. We look for someone local.

Where a plumber's area takes in your postcode, and you have said yes, they receive your enquiry. Where none does, we tell you and nothing is shared.

  3. Talk it over with the plumber.

They get in touch about the work. The price, the timing and whether to go ahead are settled between the two of you.

A drawing of a compression joint cut in half: a pipe pushed into a fitting body, with the olive squeezed between the pipe and the tightened nut.
Fig. 2 Tightening the nut squeezes the olive onto the pipe, and that is what seals the joint. A slow drip from one is common and worth mentioning.

Worth noting before you send

Handy to have ready

You can send an enquiry without any of this. It just helps the plumber picture the job.

  1. Which fitting, and where

The room, the tap, pipe, toilet or appliance involved, and whether it seems to be the hot or the cold side if you can tell.

  2. When it happens

All the time, only while a tap runs, after a flush, or while the washing machine or dishwasher is running. A pattern narrows things down.

  3. What you have already shut off

If you turned the water off at the stopcock or at a small valve on the pipe, say so, and whether that stopped it.

  4. Anything printed on the fitting

A make or model on a tap, shower or toilet cistern, often under a cap or on the base. A photo you can share later works just as well.

Water coming through a ceiling? Keep away from any light fitting or switch it is near, and turn the water off at the stopcock if you can reach it safely.

Questions

Do you do the plumbing yourselves?

No. Epping Forest Plumbers carries out no work of any kind. It is an enquiry service that, with your agreement, hands your request to one local plumber whose area includes your postcode, if there is one. From then on, you and the plumber deal with each other.

What if nobody covers my postcode?

In that case you are told, and your details are shared with no one. We only ever share an enquiry when a local plumber's area takes in your postcode.

Is a blocked drain my job or the water company's?

It depends where the blockage is. In England, since 1 October 2011, most drains connected to the public sewer and shared by two or more properties, and drains serving one home that run outside its boundary, have been the responsibility of the local sewerage company. A drain that serves only your home and sits inside your boundary is still yours. If you are unsure, ask your water company before booking anyone.

Water is coming through my ceiling now. Can you help?

This is not an emergency service. Close the stopcock, keep away from wet sockets and switches, and ring 999 if anyone is at risk. Once things are safe, you can send an enquiry about the repair.

Can a plumber found through you work on my boiler or gas pipes?

Not unless they are on the Gas Safe Register, which the law requires of anyone doing gas work as a business. If you smell gas, get out of the building first, then ring the gas emergency line on 0800 111 999.

Is there a charge for sending an enquiry?

No. Sending one is free, and you need not go ahead afterwards. Any charge for the plumbing itself is for you and the plumber to agree.
